The Sport Mind: lessons from sports

I see the sporting world as a microcosm of our society, and that makes it an ideal place to learn how to function best in our society. If you read my blog, you will read personal anecdotes, whimsical thoughts, philosophical ponderings, observations, research, articles, ideas, and quotes - but all will, however loosely, deal with the mental side of sports and how lessons learned there can be used in life. (Note, as my header might suggest, that I am a swimmer, and many posts, though maybe applicable to all sports, will pertain to swimming.)

Florida State University football team is struggling so far this year, but the band is on top! What a "thrilling" half time show they put on at the FSU-Georgia Tech game!

A feminist love for football

"The college football season is in full swing with its pageantry and rivalries. Essayist Diane Robert may be a feminist, but she just loves college football, even though it's violent, hypermasculine, warlike and imperialistic." - NPR

Diane Robert teaches English at Florida State University, and goes to all the FSU football games. This clip is short, poetic, and humorous. It raises issues of sport and gender, which I will likely blog about later, since that section is coming up with my social bases of sport class.

As an aside, the cheerleaders, in spite of all the fake smiles, silly cheers, cute hair, and painted faces do some crazy and amazing tricks on the sidelines! Except that I am aware of the high injury and death statistics and, therefore, fearful for them, I do enjoy watching them. They are historically there to cheer on the football players, but they are an act in themselves. And, interestingly, FSU has about 10 male cheerleaders as well.
